We create our voice with the whole of ourselves. Tension in the neck, jaw, shoulders, back, belly, pelvic floor, diaphragm – even a hand or leg can disrupt our breathing, distort the channel for the breath or mean we cannot make best use of the vocal folds, larynx, tongue, resonators and so on. Sometimes we have personal habits of moving or posture that involve tension; sometimes the stress of standing in front of people causes tension, sometimes the character or situation an actor or singer is playing simply doesn’t make it easy.
Of interest to anyone who uses their voice professionally to act, sing, teach or present, here is a day to begin to look at the interaction of breath, posture and movement for the voice.
