So much of our stress and tension classically ends up in neck and shoulders. And while it is very common, the reasons and the exact way out of it is different for everyone. We all have our own personal habits that help us and compromise us in differently. But there are ways we can address how we use our neck and shoulders as part of the whole of ourselves that will enable us to find our own individual way out.
We can develop a rib cage that the shoulders can simply rest on or glide over easily. We can remind the back and pelvis that they can do much of the work the arms often try to do on their own. We can remind the spine that it needs to work as a whole for the neck not to take too much strain and our whole system that we don’t need to pull ourselves up and away from the ground with shoulders, neck and chest. And so on….That already sounds like a lot for one short day - but we can make a good start and maybe create a shift in thinking that will enable you to keep making progress towards a freer neck and shoulders.
Sunday October 3rd - ‘The Core – Re-balancing’ For a strong and yet mobile ‘core’ the muscles of the front of your trunk need to work in synergy with the muscles of the back. For one set to shorten well (contract), the other set needs to be able to let go well. Otherwise one set simply pulls against the other. A different approach to the core for a better balance of the muscles without over working and strain.
10.30-4.00 | £40/£35
Sunday November 21st - ‘Opening the Chest’ Although its name suggests rigidity, your chest is actually built for flexibility, with each pair of ribs having up to 8 joints and being partly made of cartilage. Even your breastbone is not one solid bone. A day to open up the possibilities for movement in your chest, improving breath, posture – and everything you do.
10.30- 4.00 | £40/£35
Sunday January 30th - ‘‘Freeing the Breath’ We are not in control of breathing: it just continues without our conscious attention whatever we do and automatically adjusts as needed when we exert ourselves, talk, sing and so on - as long as we don’t interfere. But we can control our breathing to an extent and so we do interfere: sometimes to control emotions or because we have been taught to. A day to re-find the possibility of freer breathing.
